The Legend of Pulasa Fish

Pulasa (పులస) is the monsoon hilsa that migrates from the Bay of Bengal into the Godavari river, typically July to September. The freshwater journey raises the fish's fat content, creating a flavour unique to the Godavari catch. In Telugu homes, pulasa chepala pulusu cooked in a clay pot is a monsoon ritual.

About Pulasa Fish: Common Questions

What is pulasa fish?
Pulasa (పులస) is the Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) caught in the Godavari river during the monsoon migration. Known as hilsa in Hindi and ilish in Bengali, it is the same species. The river journey from the Bay of Bengal enriches the fish fat, making Godavari pulasa richer than sea-caught hilsa.
When is Godavari pulasa available?
The pulasa season runs from July to September, during the monsoon. Outside this window, fresh Godavari pulasa is not available. We do not sell frozen or off-season fish as pulasa.
